Josefina "Josie" Carmona, MS, LMFT

Picture
I became a therapist because I know what it’s like to feel lost in the dark. As a teenager, I struggled deeply with depression and anxiety, feeling alone, scared, and unsupported. That period of my life sparked a lifelong journey of self-discovery and a deep desire to help others navigate their own challenges. I am passionate about walking alongside my clients as they move through difficult seasons, helping them transform their experiences into a source of strength and resilience.

I believe that every individual possesses an innate capacity for healing. Healing and growth happen through connection—to ourselves, to others, and to the stories that shape our lives. My work is guided by the philosophy of kintsugi, where broken pottery is mended with gold to create something even more beautiful and resilient. There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing a client rediscover their voice and reclaim their sense of self after facing significant life challenges.

As a therapist, I aim to create a space that feels thoughtful, supportive, and genuinely human, where you feel safe exploring both challenges and possibilities. I believe therapy can be both reflective and energizing—a place where insight, compassion, and authentic connection support meaningful change.

Areas of Expertise

I work with adolescents and adults, providing a dedicated space for individuals to process their experiences and grow. I support clients navigating a wide range of issues, including  depression and anxiety , complex trauma, family-of-origin trauma, and PTSD. Additionally, I work with those facing interpersonal and relationship challenges—including toxic relationships and divorce—as well as grief, life transitions, and identity exploration.

My practice also focuses on empowerment, self-esteem building, and women’s issues, including perinatal and postpartum mental health, birth trauma, pregnancy loss, menopause, and aging. As a bilingual clinician, I am honored to provide therapy in both English and Spanish.

Therapy Approach

I provide a safe, relaxed environment where you can begin to breathe deeply and feel free to share what you have been carrying alone. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and empowering; we will work together as partners to help you achieve your goals. Clients in the past have described me as warm, compassionate, and providing a sense of calm—qualities I bring to every session to ensure you feel truly seen and heard.

My practice is client-centered, culturally sensitive, and trauma-focused, remaining rooted in systemic relational health and the inherent resilience within every individual. I integrate evidence-based modalities tailored to your unique needs, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Polyvagal Theory, and mindfulness. I also incorporate "parts work" and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you understand internal and behavioral patterns, resolve internal conflicts, and heal attachment wounds. My goal is to help you find relief, heal, and achieve lasting growth.

Education, License, and Professional Credentials

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with professional licenses in both Texas and New York. I hold a Master of Science (MS) degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University, Northridge, with a specialized focus on systemic, relational, and community mental health, as well as a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology from The University of Texas at El Paso.

Clinical Experience

My professional journey includes experience in private practice, community mental health, crisis intervention, and providing bilingual counseling services in both outpatient and community-based settings. These experiences have strengthened my passion for helping individuals heal, grow, and rediscover their sense of self.
