Our Approach

The counseling relationship is designed to be one that will facilitate change and growth. Our belief is that the therapist and the client both have active roles.

Our role is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment conducive to insight, healing and personal growth. The role of each client will be to identify goals they would like to achieve during the course of therapy. It is also important for the client to be willing to examine potential obstacles and strengths that either hinder or help movement toward obtaining the desired goals.

The approach we primarily use is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to assist individuals in recognizing how their thoughts and feelings can influence their behavior.
Through the use of CBT, individuals learn how to identify and change destructive or unhelpful thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior enabling them to feel more satisfied with their lives. We also tend to use a strength-based perspective which means working together to find past and present successes and using these to address the challenges currently being faced.

A mindfulness-based approach is also often utilized in therapy. This approach draws on many types of mindfulness-based interventions  such as teaching guided meditation, breathing exercises, guided imagery, and mindfulness skills. Mindfulness-based interventions teach individuals how to deliberately focus their attention on their present experience in a non-judgmental way and how to separate themselves from negative thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations before they become too overwhelming so they are more manageable. Other benefits individuals experience from mindfulness-based interventions  include an improved overall mood, stress and anxiety reduction, increased focus, better memory,  and better physical health.

Although CBT is primarily used, we tailor our approach to each individual based on what will be most beneficial in facilitating positive changes.

We believe every person possesses the capability to reach their desired potential, but sometimes need some guidance to begin moving along the desired path. Start your journey today!
